No fishing allowed near site of oil spill near Santa Barbara

Posted: Updated:

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) Tuesday closed fishing and shell fish harvesting in Santa Barbara County one mile both east and west of Refugio State Beach following a crude oil spill there.

Officials say the closure will remain in place until the Office of Environment Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA), part of the California Environmental Protection Agency, advises CDFW that it is safe for fishing to resume. OEHHA also advises anglers to avoid fishing in areas where there is a visible sheen on the water.

The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating the incident and the Oiled Wildlife Care Network has activated recovery teams to collect oiled animals. Anyone seeing oiled wildlife should call 1-877-UCD-OWCN.
