Thousands of cyclists to pass Refugio oil spill site

Posted: Updated:
GOLETA, Calif. (AP) - Some of the equipment being used in response to the Santa Barbara County oil spill will be moved off U.S. 101 to allow thousands of participants in the annual AIDS/LifeCycle ride to safely pass the site near Refugio State Beach.
The incident command says in a statement that nearly 2,400 cyclists are expected to ride past the area Friday morning.
Vehicles and other equipment will be moved off the highway, and cyclists will ride on the road's shoulder as they had planned.
The seven-day, 545-mile ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles raises funds for San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the HIV/AIDS-related services of the Los Angeles LGBT Center. It's the 14th year of the event, which this year has raised more than $16 million.
