Rehabilitated oiled pelicans released at Goleta Beach

Posted: Updated:
Weeks after the Plains All American oil spill on the South Coast, birds continue to be cleaned up.

Friday, 10 brown pelicans were released at Goleta Beach Park.

Wildlife officials say the birds have been rehabilitating at the Los Angeles Oiled Bird Care and Education Center for the last few weeks.

They say the birds were given food and a full medical evaluation.

"They were cleaned of all of the oil, conditioned in our aviaries, and then got to the point where they were both medically and behaviorally normal, and only then do we consider releasing them back into the environment," said Mike Ziccardi with the U.C. Davis Oiled Wildlife Care Network.

The birds will be tracked for about two years.

Wildlife officials want to see if the pelicans return to breeding colonies by next year.
