Nearly 400 animals recovered since oil spill near Refugio

Posted: Updated:
It has now been more than four weeks since a badly corroded pipeline caused more than 100,000 gallons of oil to spill near Refugio State Beach, and animals continue to be recovered from the response area.

Officials say since Wednesday evening, almost 400 birds and mammals have been recovered. Of those, 186 of the birds were dead, 57 alive, and 95 mammals were dead, 59 alive. Seventeen of the birds have since been released.

Camping reservations have been canceled at El Capitan and Refugio State Park campgrounds through at least June 25.

This past weekend, Plains All American, the company responsible for the spill, announced that any remaining oil in the water is not from their leaky pipe. Cleanup crews have shifted their focus onshore to clean up contaminated soil.
