Program helps provide food to families affected by drought in San Luis Obispo County

Posted: Updated:
The Food Bank Coalition of San Luis Obispo County is looking to help families looking at unemployment or reduced hours because of the drought.

Through Governor Brown's Drought Relief Food Program, the Food Bank has been given 70,000 pounds of food.

Paso Robles Joint Unified School District Superintendent Chris Williams says the District already provides meals to families during the school year, and now during summer vacation for both students and families, but with service jobs and agricultural jobs being cut back because of the lack of water to get their job done, the Drought Relief Program aims to make sure every family still sees a meal on their table.

"This is a proactive process with, considering what the worst-case scenarios are for our families and our community members, to say, hey, we are here not only from a Food Bank stand point but our district and our community to be able to provide opportunities at no cost to our families and students because it is that important to us to keep these kids healthy and to keep them at their home during the summertime," Williams says.

In Paso Robles, the Food Bank serves about 300 to 400 meals a day to students and family members of the school district. Williams says he plans on more for this program.

It begins in July and will be on a recurring monthly basis.
