El Capitan State Beach reopens

Posted: Updated:

One of the beaches near Santa Barbara closed because of the oil spill reopened on Friday.

El Capitan State Beach and campground were declared clean enough to be safe for the public by the California Department of Parks and Recreation and officials working on the oil spill.

The beach had been closed since May 19, after a ruptured pipeline belonging to Plains All American Pipeline dumped more than 100,000 gallons of crude oil near Refugio State Beach. Some of that oil washed up at El Capitan.

The campground at El Capitan is sold out for the weekend.

Officials say Refugio State Beach will be closed until at least July 9 depending on how clean-up efforts progress there.
