Caller claims to be IRS official, scams woman out of $36,000

Posted: Updated:

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - Police are warning people to beware of phone scammers after a woman wired $36,000 to a caller claiming to be from the IRS.
The Fresno Bee reports the woman contacted authorities when she couldn't fax the caller information about an additional $60,000 wire transfer she'd made to an account in Mexico, and was threatened with FBI or local police action.
Authorities intercepted the second transfer.
Police say the caller told the woman that a man had been arrested as he was trying to collect a Publisher's Clearing House prize she'd won. They told her she could claim the prize if she paid the taxes first.
The Hanford Police Department says these types of scams are convincing, and that if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.
