Gov. Brown signs bills to improve oil spill cleanup

Posted: Updated:

California Governor Jerry Brown signed three bills Thursday to improve the speed and effectiveness of oil spill cleanups.

One measure calls for pipeline operators to use the best spill control technology. Another will require inspections by the state fire marshal every year instead of every two or more years.

Brown says the new law will also require the office of spill prevention and response to report directly to the legislature.

The OSPR must notify the legislature within three days if chemicals are used to disperse oil in the ocean.
