Scarecrow Festival underway in Santa Ynez Valley

Posted: Updated:

A hallmark holiday event is underway in the Santa Ynez Valley. It's the annual Scarecrow Festival.

People are invited to view and vote on more than 200 scarecrows. Participating areas include Buellton, Los Alamos, Los Olivos, Santa Ynez and Solvang. Each city has their own rules, but all have one thing in common, to compete.

Many of the scarecrows are created by business owners, others are made by students and locals who like to have a little healthy competition with other residents.

The original contest was created to drive business to the area during the economically slower months of the year.

If you missed Friday's event, the festival runs through November 19th. The winning scarecrow will be announced on November 18th at a ceremony in Buellton.
