Local farming company helps give food to families in need

Volunteers will be at Talley Farms in Arroyo Grande on Saturday, Oct. 24 rescuing food to give to families in need. The event is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m.

GleanSLO is a volunteer program of the Food Bank Coalition of San Luis Obispo County. They collect produce that would otherwise go to waste from farms, orchards and backyards. On Saturday, they'll rescue food that is not marketable for growers at Talley Farms, but still offers nutritional value.

Glean805 is the first ever regional gleaning day event. The food collected on Saturday will be taken to the Food Bank's Paso Robles and Oceano Warehouse, where it will be distributed to those in need.

GleanSLO says they've rescued more than 720,000 pounds of local produce since 2010. Last year, they collected more than 165,000 pounds which was distributed to local families.

    While the beaches off of Vandenberg Air Force Base are popular for surfing, the water is also a popular spot for great white sharks, so several of the beaches there were closed this week for shark research.

    One crew member is dead and another recovering from a fishing boat accident north of San Simeon. Around midnight on Thursday, the mast of the 54-foot Pamela Rose fishing boat broke, killing one crew member and injuring another, according to the Coast Guard.
