Veterans Day events happening across the Central Coast

Veterans Day is Wednesday and there are several events happening along the Central Coast or ways people can get involved to help support local veteran services.

Last week, the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors proclaimed November as Thank a Veteran Month.

On Veterans Day, a local business is offering free car washes to veterans and active duty military members. Sunset North Car Wash has locations in Arroyo Grande, San Luis Obispo and Paso Robles. The basic hand wash is being offered from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  

Kennedy Club Fitness is letting veterans and their families work out for free at all four of their locations through Thanksgiving. 

In-Shape health clubs are also offering guest passes to veterans at all of their locations. The guest pass is available by clicking here and is good through Saturday. 

Buffalo Wild Wings is also taking part in Thank a Veteran Month. The business in San Luis Obispo is donating 10 percent of sales on Mondays through November to San Luis Obispo County Veterans, including the Veterans Express Shuttle.

Mother's Tavern in San Luis Obispo is offering free lunch or dinner on Veterans Day to all veterans as a way to thank them for their service. Proof of service is requested to receive the meal. 

Veterans can get free coffee and a donut at Surfside Donuts in Pismo Beach.

Santa Maria's Hi Way drive-in and Movies Lompoc in Lompoc are offering free admission to all military on Veterans Day.  

Also in Lompoc, Wild West Pizza at 1137 North H St. is offering a free medium cheese or pepperoni pizza to all veterans on Veterans Day. The business is open from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. 

Cal Poly is hosting Veterans Awareness Week from November 9 to 13. The university's Veterans Success Center is teaming up with community groups and other campus groups "to showcase the benefits of public service and opportunities that are available to those who served the nation."

On Wednesday, a Veterans Day event honoring all who have served our county is happening on the Pismo Beach Pier beginning at 11:00 a.m.  

In Los Osos, a Veterans Day ceremony is happening at the Los Osos Valley Memorial Park on Los Osos Valley Road. Music begins at 10:30 a.m. and the rest of the ceremony begins at 11:00. Everyone is invited to attend.

In Atascadero, another ceremony is happening at the Faces of Freedom Veterans Memorial at Atascadero Lake Park. Everyone is invited to the event, which begins at 11:00 a.m. and includes a barbecue. There will also be color guards, bag pipes, patriotic music, a historic military flyover, memorial wreath laying and more.

The Paso Robles District Cemetery is holding a ceremony beginning at 11:00 a.m. The event includes the Honor Guard, fly over, speakers and hot dog lunch. Flags will also be placed on all veterans' graves. 

Kennedy Club Fitness's location in San Luis Obispo is hosting an open house on Veterans Day. The event from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. features a bounce house and face painting, guest speakers and more. There will also be a silent auction with proceeds being split between three local non-profits that benefit veterans in San Luis Obispo County. Kenny Club Fitness says it is hosting the event to raise awareness about PTSD and suicide prevention for veterans. 

In Santa Maria, a Veterans Day barbecue is happening a the Veterans Memorial Building starting at 10:00 a.m. All veterans and their families are invited for the free meal, which includes tri-tip, chicken, salad, beans, rice and bread. Non-vets are also invited, but a $5 donation is requested. The event is put on by Michael B. Clayton & Associates. They are expecting to serve thousands of people and say the event will also include a flyover and music by local high school students. 

The American Legion Post 534 is hosting a Veterans Day event at Pine Grove Cemetery in Santa Maria. It begins at 11:00 a.m. and will include speakers from Vandenberg Air Force Base. After the event, everyone is invited to head to the American Legion post at 145 E. Clark in Orcutt for free hot dogs and chips. 

In Lompoc, a ceremony will take place on the steps of the Veterans Memorial Building on E. Locust Avenue. Everyone is invited for the event, which begins at 11:00 a.m. Veterans are encouraged to wear their military attire. The ceremony will include guest speakers and the Lompoc police and fire departments will also be involved. 

The Lompoc Elks are hosting a Veterans Day celebration Wednesday. Everyone is invited to attend. Lunch will be served at the lodge, 905 E. Ocean Ave., from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. It is free for veterans and $3 for non-veterans. There will be military memorabilia on display and music for all to enjoy.  

In Solvang, a celebration is happening at the Veterans Memorial Building from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. There will be music and food for everyone to enjoy at the free event happening at 1745 Mission Drive.

The Goleta Valley Community Center is presenting its annual Veterans Day Celebration at 10:30 a.m. The event begins at 10:30 a.m. and will feature patriotic music, a speaker from Vandenberg Air Force Base, a barbecue and more. For more information, call (805) 967-1237.

The Central Coast Veterans Memorial Museum in San Luis Obispo will be open on Veterans Day from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. People can learn about stories of local veterans and see historical artifacts on display. Documentaries about the Vietnam Era and interviews of local veterans will also be shown.

Also on Veterans Day, KSBY is teaming up once again with Si Tenenberg to help send care packages to our troops serving overseas. From 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., boxes can be picked up from KSBY studios in San Luis Obispo or Santa Maria to be shipped to the troops. People can also write checks to help cover shipping costs. Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran Army Spec. Lance Iunker will speak at the Band of Brothers mentorship meeting on Wednesday, November 11 at 6:00 a.m. The meeting will be held at the First Baptist Church chapel located at 1645 Park Street in Paso Robles. Iunker was severely injured in a non-combat related incident in 2007 that killed seven U.S. servicemen and three Iraqi detainees. Since his rehabilitation, he has worked on several veterans programs in California.

On Thursday, a Veterans Day celebration is taking place at Farmers' Market in downtown San Luis Obispo. The market runs from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. It will feature various performances and guest speakers. Veterans are also invited to take part a procession through the market beginning at 6:00 p.m. For more information on the procession and where to meet, call (805) 242-0436.
