William Herbert Pear was born on April 25, 1943. He was reported missing to the Morro Bay Police Department on September 17, 1985 by Melissa Mae True, a woman believed by police to be either his ex-girlfriend or a roommate.

Pear was last seen on August 6, 1985 at about 4:30 p.m. He was cashing his paycheck at Great American Fish Company where he worked as a chef. Pear told a co-worker he was going to Long Beach with someone and should be back at work the following day, but he never returned.

Pear reportedly left all of his personal belongings behind and it's believed he may have been hitchhiking to his destination.

A recent search by Morro Bay police determined there was no record of Pear in the Social Security Administration database and the Social Security number initially given to investigators in 1985 did not belong to him. Police say it is unknown whether Pear was trying to conceal his true identity.

At the time of his disappearance, Pear was described as 5'11" tall and 210 pounds, with brown hair and hazel eyes.
