An arrest warrant was issued for Agustin Zeferino in August of 2014 after he stopped treatment for drug-resistant tuberculosis. Health officials said he posed a serious health risk to anyone who might come into contact with him.
Tuberculosis is a bacterial disease spread by coughing or sneezing. Drug-resistant TB can be life-threatening and is difficult to treat. It is curable, but the process can take up to two years. A normal case of tuberculosis can usually be treated in a six to nine-month period.
Zeferino was last seen on August 11, 2014. Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office and Public Health officials actively searched for him, speaking with family and friends and visiting places he was known to frequent. He was also placed on a list preventing him from boarding an airplane.
Zeferino was born on January 2, 1990. At the time of his disappearance, he was described as 5'0" tall and 120 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.
