A tiny kitten was discovered headed down a conveyor belt at a recycling facility in Galt on Tuesday, just as she was moving toward a potentially fatal compression.

Cal-Waste Loader Operator Tony Miranda was sorting the recycling when the newborn feline came into view.

"It was surrounded by a bunch of debris and material, I mean it was hard to see it but I spotted it really quick," he said.

The kitten was already a survivor before Miranda scooped her up. She presumably made it through a ride on a garbage truck before a tractor pushed her onto the first of two conveyor belts. After a several foot fall from one belt to another, Miranda spotted her.

"We put so much material in here and we run so much stuff through it," Miranda said. "It's just amazing to see a little kitty survive through all this. It made my day today, definitely made my day."

Shift Supervisor Heather Garcia is adopting the kitten. She named it after the Material Recovery Facility, or MRF, where she was found.

"We chose to name her Murphy 'cause she's found here on the MRF," Garcia said.

A veterinarian examined Murphy and said she's in good health.

Daytime highs for the interior valleys are backing off from triple digits on Monday. Temperatures for California Valley and Shandon will get close to 100 degrees on Monday, but right now daytime highs will range from the upper 80s to upper 90s. High pressure over the area is moving to the east, which is allowing for those interior valleys to cool down this week. However, with extremely dry live and dead fuel paired with gusty onshore winds, fire weather danger remains to be of concern...
