IRS phone scam targeting locals

Posted: Updated:

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office is warning about a phone scam that they say is targeting a large number of people.
They say the scam involves someone claiming to be from the IRS or U.S. Department of the Treasury saying you owe an outstanding tax bill.

The scammer then tries to con the targeted victim into sending cash through a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer.
Officials say the IRS would never require you to pay your taxes with a pre-paid debit card or call you without first sending a notice in the mail.

Officials say if you do receive a call like this, hang up immediately and do not give out any information. You can report the scam by calling (800) 366-4484 or through the IRS Impersonation Scam Reporting web page.
