Local Spotlight: San Luis Obispo Symphony plans July 4th spectacular

Posted: Updated:

Believe it or not, July is just over four months away.

In recent years, budget cuts, and concerns over fire dangers, forced several Central Coast communities to scale back or cancel their fireworks shows.

But this year, a group of private citizens in Paso Robles is planning a spectacular Fourth of July evening of wine, food, fireworks, and classical music.

It is an evening on the green with the San Luis Obispo Symphony, at the Paso Robles Horse Park.

The orchestra will perform on a stage at one end, and out front, there will be table seating with wine service, and plenty of room on the grass for families to spread out on blankets.

"Fireworks are going to be located behind the stage a bit, so they'll kind of come out from behind what you're watching as far as the symphony goes," explains the horse park's director, Amanda Diefenderfer.

"It's going to be music you will recognize," Steve Cass, one of the organizers, says.  "So, it's going to be 'Stars and Stripes Forever,'  '1812 Overture,' cannons at the end.  It's supposed to be fun music, patriotic theme."

Because the 4th falls on a Monday this year, the concert and fireworks display will actually take place on Saturday, July 2nd.
