It's clear that gasoline prices are creeping upwards, but students at Cal Poly have an answer for that. They've developed a prototype vehicle that gets 1,215 miles per gallon.

That prototype was the top-scoring American entry and finished third overall at the 10th Annual Shell Eco-Marathon Americas, a competition focused on energy efficiency. Only two Canadian teams did better.

The car is not street legal, and can only go about 15 miles per hour, but the goal was to maximize fuel efficiency.
