LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Los Angeles subway system is expanding, and so too are the number of prehistoric fossils being recovered as crews dig beneath the city. Work on one extension began in 2014. Since then, crews have routinely turned up the fossilized remains of rabbits, camels, bison and other creatures that roamed the region during the last Ice Age. But paleontologist Ashley Leger says "the big one" uncovered by her team was the intact skull of a juvenile mammoth.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Officials say the largest, most destructive wildfire burning in Southern California is expected to grow as it enters its second week. The Thomas Fire north of Los Angeles has burned more than 270 square miles, prompted tens of thousands of evacuations and destroyed nearly 800 structures. Despite the size and number of wildfires burning in the region, there has only been one confirmed death: A 70-year-old woman, who crashed her car on an evacuation route.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a pilot escaped serious injury when his small plane caught fire during an emergency landing at a California airport. The plane took off Saturday afternoon from Sacramento Executive Airport but returned a short time later after the pilot experienced mechanical difficulties. Laurie Slothower, a spokeswoman for the Sacramento County Department of Airports, says the aircraft caught fire during the landing.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - It's a car free day in parts of LA. Several miles of streets in downtown Los Angeles, MacArthur Park and Koreatown are closed to motor vehicles Sunday as the city's latest celebration of the CicLAvia (sick-luh-VEE'-uh) festival opens the lanes to cyclists. The city's first CicLAvia was held along the same route in 2010. Thousands of cyclists, skaters and pedestrians are expected to participate in the event, modeled on a weekly car-free tradition started in Bogota, Colombia.
