President signs "Pipes Act" into law

Posted: Updated:

President Obama signed "The Pipes Act,"  designed to prevent spills like the Refugio oil spill disaster on the South Coast, into law Wednesday.

The bill is an effort to strengthen the safety of natural gas and hazardous liquid pipeline systems as well as improve oversight of the energy industry. The measure also addresses ways to prevent and mitigate the impact of oil spills.

Representative Lois Capps praised the bill's passage, saying, "This new law will help protect the health and safety of communities and environments... by raising the safety standards for pipelines and implementing lessons learned from past accidents in order to prevent future spills."
