Local Spotlight: Shrek The Musical

Posted: Updated:

If you've ever felt a little awkward, a little clumsy, maybe a bit too loud for the room, you can probably relate to the green ogre and his overly enthusiastic side-kick, Donkey.

When the cartoon feature, "Shrek," arrived in theaters, it charmed audiences with its anti-hero heroes, its smart and capable heroine, Fiona, and the message that it's okay to be you.

Now, "Shrek" is a PCPA musical you can catch under the stars in Solvang.

Actor Erik Stein plays the green giant, a role he says he understood intuitively as someone who, himself, reached the height of 6' 6" at age 14.

"The struggles that we go through as children, as teenagers, as adults," he says,  "... figuring out, where do we belong? Are we too odd? Are we too weird? Are our oddities what make us special?"

"Shrek The Musical" asks lots of those questions and offers courage in return.

"The genius of the piece is that those songs are not songs that you would expect to come out of an ogre's mouth," explains director Brad Carroll. "They're very human."

The PCPA's production of "Shrek the Musical" takes the stage every Wednesday through Sunday night until the end of the month at the Solvang Festival Theatre.
