Callers claim to represent local sheriff's office in latest phone scam

Posted: Updated:

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office is warning the public about a phone scam that has reportedly targeted a number of local residents.

Several people have recently reported that they were contacted by someone claiming to be from the Sheriff's Office. The caller warned the residents there was a warrant out for their arrest because they failed to appear for jury duty or missed a court date. To clear the warrant, the caller instructs the resident to make arrangements for payment with a pre-paid debit card.

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office says it does not contact residents by phone regarding such matters and does not ask for money over the phone.

They ask anyone who receives a call like this to report it to their local law enforcement agency and spread the word about this scam to family and friends.
