Beer, wine on the menu at Cal Poly venue

Posted: Updated:

Cal Poly has a new, first-of-its-kind food and beverage space. Beer and wine are on the menu at Mustang Station. Many at the university seem to enjoy the option of alcohol being served on campus during school hours.

"It's really nice to not have to leave campus and go get alcohol. It's just fun between classes, you can just de-stress," said Cal Poly senior Zach Hoffman.

Students aren't the only ones excited about beer and wine on campus. Cal Poly Staff member Sean Pellerin is, too.

"When (students) have a final or they are done with their midterms, this is great way to come and relax with some friends now and then. Staff, too, we have a place on campus to kind of relax," explained Pellerin.

Only customers age 21 and older can order these beverages after 2 p.m. during school days. On weekends, alcohol will be served all day. Christina Casillas is wondering how it will work.

"It's going to be interesting to see how it's going to be monitored and how the instructors are going to know if the student is intoxicated during class and if students will be more tempted because it's right here," she said.

Mustang Station will be monitoring the amount of beer or wine purchased at one time. An ID card reader will be used for every transaction.

Michael Cornacchia, a crew member at Mustang Station, said employees will keep an eye on those ordering drinks.

"We've kind of seen how many pints or pitchers you've had. We can kind of see and know when to cut you off, especially if it's, like, 3:30 in the afternoon and you've already had two pitchers -- that's not going to happen. We are going to cut you off," explained Cornacchia.

Cal Poly Corporation said Vista Grande Dining Hall served alcohol, too, but this is the first time alcohol is being served at a permanent venue at the University Union.

Alcohol is also allowed and/or available at tailgating and other athletics activities such as Cal Poly baseball games. It's also allowed at Cal Poly Canyon Village if you are of age and your roommates all agree to it.
