Local Spotlight: Festival Mozaic WinterMezzo Concert Series

Posted: Updated:

Festival Mozaic is back this weekend with the first concerts of the WinterMezzo series.

The music of Beethoven, Vivaldi, Grieg, and Coleman, will fill the air at the San Luis Obispo Art museum, Cass Winery, and the United Methodist Church in San Luis Obispo.

When you think of Beethoven, you probably think of his symphonies, but his chamber music was also top notch and a lot of fun to listen to.

"People claim, oh, I don't know anything about this music, but people do, actually. it's quite universal. Beethoven liked to exercise the left hand of a pianist so it sounds a little bit like hip-hop there's a lot of bass." says artistic director Scott Yoo.

Scott Yoo plays with pianist Susan Grace, and they have been playing together for 14 years.

"We hardly say anything to each other during the rehearsal because we know exactly what each other is thinking an we just play it through a couple of times, discuss a few things, play it again and we're pretty much done. It's a lot of fun to play with Sue."

And forget what you've heard about Beethoven's dark moods the music by the 28-year-old composer was anything but dour.

"That's what he was when he wrote, he was also a genius, but he was a kid. He was young." says Yoo.

Tickets are still available for this Festival Mozaic WinterMezzo Concert on Saturday night at United Methodist Church in San Luis Obispo.
