Local Spotlight: "Beauty and the Beast"

Posted: Updated:

As the holiday's frantic shopping season gets underway with heavy traffic and hub-bub, it's important to remember the simple things.
A spectacular show at the PCPA will quickly remind you of those, while keeping you thoroughly entertained.

"I thought I told you to come down for dinner!" roars the beast--to which a salty young Belle replies, "I'm not hungry!"

Even if you haven't seen the Disney animated version, you likely know the story of the arrogant prince turned into a beast by an enchantress.  If he can learn to love another and earn that love in return by the time the last petal on a rose under glass falls, the spell will be broken.
"If not," intones the enchantress, "...he will be doomed to remain a beast for all time."

Belle, a very bright, young woman dreams of escape from her small town and including a rather chauvinistic suitor...
"It's not right for a woman to read!" complains Gaston.  "Soon, she starts getting ideas and thinking..."
PCPA Director, Mark Booher says the character of Gaston, who's this great braggadocio and often, the loudest voice, or the dog that's barking the loudest, is the one that's feeling small and fearful."

But taking on the big dog--the beast, means Belle will also need compassion.
"She really has to grow up," explains Annali Fuchs, the actress playing Belle.  "She starts very very intellectual and has very big dreams and great aspirations of what she wants and needs, but doesn't quite understand what all of that really means."

Booher says her transformation and the beast's boil down to the basics.
"Something as simple as beauty is found within. That's when we're finally learning to love... when we're living for the good of another and not just for our own good."

The PCPA production of Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" runs through December 23rd at the Marian Theatre on the Allan Hancock College campus  in Santa Maria.
