UPDATE: Cyclist dead in collision near Whale Rock Reservoir

Posted: Updated:

CHP confirms a cyclist is dead following an accident on Old Creek Road by the north end of Whale Rock Reservoir.

Cal Fire and CHP responded to the scene around 1:00 p.m. Saturday.

Sgt. Eric Martinez of CHP San Luis Obispo said the driver of a pickup truck crossed over the double yellow lines going eastbound and struck a cyclist who was traveling westbound.

Martinez only identified the cyclist as a 47-year-old man from San Luis Obispo and the driver as a 59-year-old man from Templeton.

The road was mostly closed as crews investigated, but Sgt. Martinez said they allowed cars through using the shoulder.

"It's extremely important to adhere to the rules of the road and not pass over double yellow lines," Sgt. Martinez said.

He said drugs and alcohol are not believed to have been involved. He also said no arrests had been made. The investigation is ongoing.
