A Morro Bay man charged in the death of his father was found incompetent Thursday to stand trial for murder.

A mental health evaluation was ordered for 22-year-old William Joel Schonberger at his initial arraignment last month.

Schonberger is charged with the murder of this father, 59-year-old William John Schonberger, whose body was found the morning of December 9 at a home on the 400 block of Napa Avenue in Morro Bay. Investigators said the elder Schonberger was killed with a machete.

The San Luis Obispo County District Attorney's Office said Schonberger will return to court on January 18 to determine his treatment and that he will be treated until he is determined fit to stand trial.

In the meantime, Schonberger remains in custody at San Luis Obispo County Jail.
