A large mountain lion was euthanized Monday in San Luis Obispo after the California Highway Patrol says it was hit by a car on Highway 1 near Camp San Luis Obispo, leaving the vehicle with major damage.

CHP says the driver was heading toward San Luis Obispo at about 7:00 a.m. when the animal jumped from the center median and right in front of his vehicle.

The driver, according to CHP, described the mountain lion as being "as long as the car was wide."

Officers say the animal, which had made its way down a nearby embankment after being hit, was suffering and officials determined it was best for it to be put down.

The driver was not injured, but the vehicle had to be towed from the scene.

CHP says there are many collisions involving animals that happen on Highway 1 between Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo, but that the majority of them involve deer.
