A couple of surfers came to the rescue of two people and a dog when their SUV became stuck on the beach where the Arroyo Grande Creek flows into the ocean at the Oceano Dunes.

The driver was apparently trying to cross the creek when his wheels got stuck in the sand and water overtook the vehicle.

"We saw this car drive through the water and all of a sudden start to submerge," said Nick Chapman. "I saw there was two people in it and one dog. I went out to assess the situation and ended up pulling both them out and the dog."

State Parks officials towed the SUV off the beach.

The driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI.

Rangers want to remind people not to cross the creek as the tide comes in because they say the water is much more powerful than drivers may expect.
