"The Importance of Being Earnest" takes stage at SLO Little Theatre this weekend

Posted: Updated:

A play regarded as one of the funniest in the English language hits the stage this weekend at the SLO Little Theatre. It's the young performers' production of Oscar Wilde's "The Importance of Being Earnest."

The title is a play on words. Two of the main characters are professing to be "earnest" as they court women from each other's camps. Those women are both in search of a man of earnest character and, if he happens to be named Earnest, well, so much the better.

"I don't like it!" exclaims one of the men pretending to be Earnest. "Well, I don't like your clothes!" protests the other. "You look perfectly ridiculous in them!"

"There's, you know, twists and turns in the play for a person taking names and being someone else when they really aren't," explains actor Jedidiah Authier, "...just to make it better for themselves in their life and stuff. It's very interesting."

All of the actors in this production are students under the age of 18.

The show is presented as a production class for young actors and is part of the Academy of Creative Theatre Educational Program.

"The Importance of Being Earnest" runs through January 29th.
