No cause of death yet for beached whale set to be buried in Pismo Beach

Posted: Updated:

Experts studying a whale calf that was found stranded on shore and then died Tuesday in Pismo Beach have found no obvious cause of death so far.

Rescuers say the gray whale was one month old. Members of The Marine Mammal Center are going to send tissue samples to pathologists in an effort to determine the cause of death.

Having access to the dead whale has proven to be a good learning experience for Cal Poly students, who were able to experience the necropsy.

The carcass is still on the beach but officials do plan to bury it once the necropsy is completed.
