SLO Food Bank celebrates new facility

Posted: Updated:

The Food Bank Coalition of San Luis Obispo held a ribbon-cutting event and open house Monday for its new facility.

Since demand has grown, food bank operators say they have decided to merge two previous facilities in Paso Robles and Oceano into one big facility.

The new facility at 1180 Kendall Road in San Luis Obispo can hold up to 15 million pounds of food.

"By having one central facility instead of two, our operating costs are less. We're able to send (food) out in a better, efficient manner. Being in the center of your operation model and going out to the entire community is way more efficient: Less fuel, less mileage, less time on the road," said Wendy Lewis, chief operations officer.

The resources saved by the new, central location will be used to create more programs, Lewis says.
