Greek organizations at Cal Poly raised close to a half-million dollars for several nonprofit organizations last year, the university said Monday.

The Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Council, and United Sorority and Fraternity Council raised the funds.

A highlight of 2016 was Chi Omega's "Chi O Casino," during which they raised $45,000 in one night for Make-A-Wish. Alpha Omicron Pi also raised $30,000 with its citywide arthritis walk.

Other charities gifted with donations included the Military Heroes Campaign and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

"These results showcase the dedication and passion for service that Greek Life brings to the community," Interfraternity Council President Danny Halprin said in a statement. "I am extremely impressed with our Greek members and chapters and hope to help lead the effort to continue progressing these outstanding contributions."

Together, the three Greek councils said they collectively volunteered more than 35,000 hours of community service work in 2016.
