SWAT on standby for Milo Yiannopoulos event at Cal Poly

Posted: Updated:

Controversial alt-right speaker Milo Yiannopolous is set to take the stage Tuesday at Cal Poly. Since several of Yiannopolous' events have led to protests, university officials say they are not taking any chances and will be beefing up law enforcement to prepare for the worst.

The tour bus for Milo Yiannapolous displays the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. While college campuses welcome his political talks, his tour has led to chaos.

A man was shot during a protest at the University of Washington, officers in riot gear made arrests at the University of New Mexico, and the tour was canceled at UCLA, UC Santa Barbara, and UC Davis.

"The decision was made because the lives of the officers were threatened, the lives of students were threatened, as well as the property of the school," said Andrew Mendoza with Davis College Republicans, the group that helped bring Yiannopolous to UC Davis.

Yiannapolous grew in popularity with Breitbart News after authoring headlines such as, "There's no hiring bias against women in tech, they just suck at interviews." He has angered women with tweets, including one stating, "There's a new feminist Barbie. When you pull the string it says 'Math is hard, let's lie about rape.'”

Yiannapolous has since been banned from Twitter after waging a harassment campaign against actress Leslie Jones.

On his tour, he's encouraged Americans to reject Islam and has advocated for his audience to "purge your local illegals" by reporting undocumented immigrants to federal authorities.

Cal Poly officials say they have been closely watching the events at the other campuses and will be working with the San Luis Obispo Police Department.

"They've made a request for our SWAT team and our department will be contributing 12 members of that team to the event," said Captain Christopher Staley with the San Luis Obispo Police Department.

While the SWAT team will be on standby, several campus officers and SLO PD will be outside and inside the theater.

"Each community has reacted differently, so we are hoping Cal Poly will be a peaceful reaction," said Captain Staley.

The event at Cal Poly is sold out with more than 400 people attending from 6 to 9 pm at Spanos Theatre. We'll have live team coverage Tuesday night during our 5, 6, 10 and 11 p.m. newscasts.
