Paso Robles girl's water polo continues to make history

Posted: Updated:

The Paso Robles High School girl's water polo team has never won a CIF playoff game in school history.

Last week, the Bearcats defeated Savannah, 17-8 in the first round to advance to the quarterfinals.

Over the weekend, the Bearcats defeated Webb High School, 8-4. Now, the girls are preparing for their first-ever semifinals on Wednesday.

Leading the program is second-year head coach, Grant East. He has been with the program for several years, crediting his overall time to help develop the girls' talent over the years.

For some, creating history adds extra nerves or pressure, however, East says it's been exciting to advance this far. "Each game we've won, I've been less nervous because it's nice that at this point, we've done something no Paso team has done in water polo. I think the girls feel it and they're really excited and just want to have some fun," said East.

East also reflects on the leadership his seniors have been able to display for the team. "One of the things that's really helped us in the last few games is communication and working as a team. There is not one strong player; there's a lot of strong players working together," said Marina Smeltzer, Bearcats senior co-captain.

The Bearcats welcome Redland East Valley in the CIF Division 6 semifinals at Arroyo Grande High School on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
