Safe & Secure: Grover Beach PD Initiates Neighborhood Watch Programs

Posted: Updated:

Grover Beach police are trying to go back to an old way of doing things by getting neighbors to communicate with each other in an effort to combat crime and it's already proven effective in one neighborhood.

"I think the goal for this is to set the tone for a place where kids can play in the street safely, for people to ride bikes, walk dogs ... just having a sense of unity and community," said Maggie Pastor who initiated a Neighborhood Watch Program after she noticed some problems in her community. "With the help of the neighbors and the police and all of us working together, it's getting better."

Grover Beach police want to help other communities get similar results through more Neighborhood Watch Programs by arming them with crime prevention tools and information.

"Better lighting, surveillance cameras, knowing what to look out for," Commander Angelo Limon, described ways to ward off criminals.

Police would also like to bring down crime rates after seeing a ten percent spike in aggravated assaults, burglaries, robberies, and thefts last year.

"And that could potentially help us in reducing those types of crimes," said Commander Limon.

The hope is to get neighbors communicating with one another and with the police department in an effort to take neighborhoods back from criminals and clean up Grover Beach's image.

"I want it to be, 'hey! you live in Grover Beach?! That's awesome!'" said Pastor.

The first step in setting up a Neighborhood Watch Program is contacting your local police department. An officer will come out to your neighborhood to meet with you and others who are interested in how to move forward.

Grover Beach P.D. is hosting a meeting March 23 at 6:30 p.m. at 1230 Trouville Avenue where people can learn more.
