A sinkhole closed a portion of Fredericks Street in San Luis Obispo Friday afternoon.

The sinkhole opened up after a 12-inch high-pressure water main burst beneath the street.

Crews were able to prevent the water from flowing into nearby homes by using sand bags and other measures while the water was being turned off.

Fredericks Street was closed between Kentucky Street and Chaplin Lane but residents were being allowed to walk in.

Crews said other parts of the street were showing signs of cracking and stress. It was unknown when the sinkhole would be repaired or the street reopened.
