Central Coast Living: Solvang

As the Sun rises, so does the dough inside Olsen's Danish Bakery. It's the first stop for any trip into Solvang. Owner Bent Olsen can share a story with you about when his father convinced him to move from Denmark to Solvang.

"He saw something here that was amazing. He saw something that was unbelievable," remembers Olsen.

The town has grown into a tourist destination. The streets have plenty of tourists snapping photos in front of the architecture. Tracy Farhad, the executive director with the visitors bureau, says some Danish people have told her they think of Solvang as more Danish than Denmark. It's a microcosm of the country.

"You may have to travel the whole country and get little bits of it here and there. Solvang has retained that traditional heritage that many folks remember from their grandparents. It's from the farming lands," said Tracy Farhad.

Solvang's Danish translation means "sunny fields".

While the architecture remains the same, the wine and chocolate industries have evolved. The wine is world-renowned and the chocolate companies like Ingeborg's Danish Chocolates have evolved, too.

"We're just seeing the palettes change with the wines coming out and they want to try something new and different," said owner Kim Jensen.
