Local Spotlight: Civic Ballet's "Rodeo"

Posted: Updated:

The Civic Ballet of San Luis Obispo's Spring Gala is this weekend.

The first act is a debut of a new ballet that much of the Central Coast can relate to, rodeo.

"Rodeo: The Courting at Burnt Ranch" is a contemporary retelling of a love story set against the backdrop of the trying times of the great American dust bowl.
Artistic Director Andrew Silvaggio puts a twist on the celebrated ballet.
"It's a great, beautiful little love story," he says. "I wanted to add some to it. I actually took away some of Aaron Copeland's music and bolstered it with some pieces that I really wanted to use, some good, old-fashioned country tunes, some Johnny Cash, some Garth Brooks, and some Dolly Parton."

Performances take place Friday at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at the Cal Poly Spanos Theater. Click here for ticket information.
