Parents concerned after Paso Robles student threatened on her way to school

Posted: Updated:

A scary situation Thursday, near Flamson Middle School in Paso Robles. Police say a man chased after a young girl, on her way to school and threatened her.

The 12-year-old girl lives just blocks away from school.

On her way to class, police say a drunk man ran up behind her, threatened to sexually assault her, and chased her.

Fortunately, the young girl was able to get away.

700 Flamson student families received a call, letter, and email explaining what happened near the school

"I got a voicemail from the school from the principal, Dr. Miller that a student had been harassed on the street," said a local Flamson Middle School parent.

The young girl noticed a man following her, the girl began to walk faster, but as he got closer, she was forced to run.

"He began chasing her and at that point, he was yelling he was going to sexually assault her. It was wholly inappropriate and criminal," said Lt. Ty Lewis with the Paso Robles Police Department

A crossing guard and a police officer happened to be nearby. They protected the girl and arrested the man.

"She was very shaken up, we were glad we were there to ensure that this guy didn't get away," said Lt. Lewis.

"That is very alarming that something like that is happening in this community," said another local parent.

20-year old Jesus Bernalsalgado was charged with several different offenses including; threatening or annoying a child under the age of 18, assault with intent to rape a child, and being drunk in public.

"It definitely makes you want to be more cautious who your kids are around and what you're teaching them at home when they encounter a stranger," a local parent said.

"At this point, there is nothing to indicate he regretted what he did. The investigation is continuing into his past," said Lt. Lewis.

Jesus Bernalsalgado is currently held on $100,000 bail at the San Luis Obispo county jail. Police add that the girl was not injured and the suspect never made physical contact with her

Police want to remind parents to talk with their kids about being aware of their surroundings. If they are walking to school, make sure they have a plan with a safe place to go.
