The 77th Annual Poly Royal Rodeo sold out Saturday night at Spanos Stadium.

For the first time ever, the rodeo was held at the stadium. Between online sales and tickets purchased at the door, the stands hit capacity with 11,000 people.

"The whole year we've been working towards this. This is the biggest rodeo, everybody looks forward to it," said tie down roper, Caden Farquer.

Farquer says he treats every rodeo leading up to Poly Royal as practice.

"This is the one you set your goal as like I want to win Poly Royal," he continued.

Cal Poly Barrel Racer, Taylor Flaherty says for her, it's all about the team effort.

"You really have to just match perfectly to have a really good run. It's really competitive so you just have to hustle and really try your best," said Taylor Flaherty.

Friday, the two-day show was canceled due to the rain forcing contestants to compete at the old arena on campus.

"The rain was kind of unfortunate obviously but that's rodeo. You just have to adjust to it so we were all ready for it," said Maddy Celio.

Seventy-five barrel racers like Celio competed. Though she didn't make the top 10 for Saturday's show, she and her horse, Gray prepares each and every day for the rodeo.

"It takes up basically all your extra time and all your extra money but it's worth it," she said.

Meanwhile, organizers say the Spanos Stadium floor survived the rain overnight thanks to a tarp.

Saturday morning, rocks in the dirt were removed to protect livestock. Barriers were set up around the arena and lime was also sprinkled on the ground to absorb the moisture.

Relieved the wet weather is gone, contestants are eager for the show ahead and how Cal Poly does as a whole.

"We're really excited to see how many people show up tonight and it's going to be a great show," concluded Celio.

"Our rodeo team is really one of the best in the nation," said barrel roper, Kayla Nichols.

The Poly Royal Rodeo is a fundraiser for the Cal Poly Rodeo Team.
