Local libraries waive late fees when you donate food

Posted: Updated:

If you've been meaning to return some overdue books to the library but are dreading paying the late fees, some local libraries are offering a charitable alternative.

This week, San Luis Obispo County Public Libraries and the Lompoc Library System will forgive all outstanding library fines when you donate non-perishable food items.

For every food item donated, one dollar will be taken off your late fees and there's no limit.

Food for Fines Week is part of the celebration of National Library Week.

All food donations collected at SLO County libraries will be given to the Food Bank Coalition of San Luis Obispo County.

The Lompoc Food Pantry will receive the food donations collected from Lompoc libraries.

Fees for lost or damaged items are not covered by the Food for Fines program.
