Libraries waiving overdue book fees in exchange for food

Posted: Updated:

In honor of National Library Week, if you have a late fee, you can get it waived at San Luis Obispo County public libraries.

Libraries are accepting non-perishable food in exchange for overdue books Monday through Friday. Each food item is worth $1 in late fees. All food collected will go to the Food Bank Coalition of San Luis Obispo.

"The event is really geared towards giving back to the community and giving people a way to remove fines from their account if they can't afford to do so," said Chase McMunn, assistant director of libraries.

This is the seventh year the county has done this event. Last year, about 2,000 pounds of food were donated and organizers hope to top that this year.

Lompoc Public Library is also holding the same event.
