Layoffs planned at Vandenberg Air Force Base

United Launch Alliance is laying off 48 employees from Vandenberg Air Force Base, according to the California Employment Development Department.

ULA is working to provide what it calls "cost-effective solutions for customers" amid increased competition from companies including SpaceX.

United Launch Alliance is a joint venture of the space divisions of Lockheed Martin and Boeing.

The layoffs will be permanent starting June 1.
