Young cancer survivor uses haircut as 17 Strong fundraiser opportunity

Posted: Updated:

A local boy who battled cancer for years is now giving to a cancer foundation in another patient's memory.
Young Mateo Cota went through three years, three months of treatment, finishing last December.
He has been wanting to cut his hair since last summer, but decided to grow it out in order to donate his hair to another cancer patient.
His family started a fundraiser leading up to the haircut to help the "17 Strong" foundation of the late Ryan Teixeira.

"Mateo prays almost nightly for Ryan and talks about Ryan Teixeira a lot, and me and my husband knew we needed to do something special with his hair because it's a special moment for us and we decided to do a fundraiser for Ryan Teixeira 17 Strong," said Mateo's mother, Erika Cota.

The moment brought his mother to tears.

The haircut raised nearly $4,000 for the 17 Strong Foundation. Donations are still being accepted and can be made here

Cota says Mateo first lost his hair in March 2014, but this time "he is choosing to cut his hair instead of cancer taking it away."
