Police: Man wielding hatchet threatens 7-Eleven clerk

Posted: Updated:

Santa Barbara police arrested a man early Tuesday morning after they say he threatened a 7-Eleven clerk with a hatchet.

It all started shortly before 2:45 a.m. at the store on the 300 block of West Montecito Street.

Police say the clerk saw a man walk into the store, take a couple of items off the shelves, and put them into his jacket pocket. Another customer reportedly offered to buy the man something, the man picked out a small item, the customer paid for it, and the man left.

Police say the clerk believed the man still had some items from the store in his pockets, so he went outside to confront him. The man reportedly became aggressive with the clerk, shoved him, and the clerk sprayed him with pepper spray.

A few minutes after the clerk went back inside, police say the man returned to the store with a hatchet, stood outside and yelled at the clerk, threatening to cut off his face. The clerk called 911 and the man reportedly ran off.

Officers arrived, took a look at the store's surveillance video, and located a man believed to be the suspect a short distance away.

Police say the store clerk was able to positively identify the man in a lineup.

The suspect has been identified as Robert Jude Giles, 35. Police say he is a transient from out of the area.

He was booked into Santa Barbara County Jail on charges of robbery, criminal threats, and brandishing an ax.
