Sheriff releases identity of inmate who died in custody

Posted: Updated:

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office has identified an inmate who died in custody last Thursday as 60-year-old Kevin Lee McLaughlin of San Luis Obispo.

McLaughlin reportedly died at 3:50 a.m. at the San Luis Obispo County Jail.

The Sheriff's Office says correctional officers found the man in his cell; he was unresponsive and breathing irregularly. A deputy started CPR and used an automatic electronic defibrillator while an ambulance was on the way, but they weren't able to revive him.

McLaughlin’s mother requested Sheriff's officials wait to announce his identity until she was able to notify family members.

The body was transported to Santa Cruz for an autopsy, which will determine the cause of death.
