A motorcyclist suffered major injuries in a crash on Highway 101 in Carpinteria on Wednesday morning.

It happened at about 6:45 a.m. in the northbound lanes just south of Highway 150.

The California Highway Patrol says the motorcyclist, a 42-year-old man from Ventura, struck the back of a van in front of him in the fast lane. The motorcyclist was ejected from his bike, suffering multiple broken bones and head trauma, according to officers. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The driver of the van, a 54-year-old man from Ventura, was not injured.

The fast lane was closed for about an hour because of the crash.

The CHP is investigating what caused the motorcyclist to hit the van. Officers say neither drugs nor alcohol are believed to be factors in the crash.
