A seven-month-old puppy named "Riley" that was reportedly stolen from the Santa Maria Animal Center last week has been returned, according to Santa Barbara County Animal Services.

Riley was taken from the shelter on April 13. Surveillance video showed a man entering the back of the shelter, carrying the puppy out of the dog kennel area, tossing him over a fence, and following him into a field.

Animal Services says local animal advocate Debbie Warren returned Riley to the shelter on Wednesday, April 19 after she was able to make contact with someone who knew the person that took the puppy.

Riley was checked out by veterinarians and determined to be in good health despite losing some weight.

Animal Services says the thousands of social media posts about Riley helped lead to his safe return.
