This summer, Cal Poly will break ground on a project that could generate up to 25 percent of the university’s electricity and save the school $17 million.

The facility will have more than 16,000 solar panels each with a 4.5-megawatt capacity and will generate more than 11 million kWh per year. University officials say that’s enough to power about a quarter of Cal Poly’s power needs. Each panel will also have a sun tracking feature that increases energy production by 30 percent.

University officials say the project would eventually save more than $17 million over the next 20 years.

The university plans to build the facility on the west side of campus, along Highway 1. The project is expected to be completed in winter of 2017.

REC Solar, one of the nation’s largest solar companies will finance, design, build, and maintain the facility. REC Solar is a local company founded by Cal Poly graduates.
