SLO Tigers draw in spring tournament opener

Posted: Updated:

Cooper Benson had the lone RBI for SLO High as the Tigers played to a 2-2 draw with Fountain Valley in their opening game of the San Luis Obispo 43rd Annual Spring Baseball Tournament. The tie was San Luis Obispo High's first of the year, moving their record to 6-9-1 (5-7 PAC-8). Normally extra innings would be played, but the rules of the tournament allowed for games to end in a tie if a time limit is reached.

Ollie Hicks got the start for the Tigers on the mound, going five innings, surrendering four hits, two earned runs and three walks while striking out six. Will Compton pitched the final two innings and didn't allow a hit.

Fountain Valley scored first in the third inning after Sebastian Murillo's base hit plated Travis Aversa. The Barons would get two runs in the third.

San Luis Obispo finally broke through in the fifth inning after Cooper Benson roped a hard hit ball to third base that couldn't be handled, allowing Ben Lemeier to score from third and cut their deficit to 2-1. With runners on the corners, the Tigers pulled off the double steal with Benson safe at second and Bryce Ramirez scoring to even the game at 2-2.

Benson would get in scoring position again in the bottom of the seventh thanks to a well hit ball to the left-center field fence that resulted in a standing double. But Benson would be stranded and the game finishing in a tie.

The Tigers continue tournament play on Thursday with a doubleheader against Pitman (4:30 p.m.) and Marina (7:00 p.m.) at Taylor Field. St. Joseph will play Golden Valley at Sinsheimer Park (3:00 p.m.) while Morro Bay will host Marantha (12:00 p.m.) and Enochs (6:00 p.m.).
